Joyce Maria Nelson

Feb 5, 1934 — Sep 28, 2026

Joyce Maria Nicholson Nelson was born on February 5, 1934, in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. She lived a remarkable life defined by determination, compassion, service, and a deep commitment to caring for others.

Joyce received her early education at Bodmin College and Kingston Technical School. Following graduation, she began her working career at the Bureau of Statistics, where she worked for one year.

An accomplished and enthusiastic athlete, Joyce had a great love for sports. Her talent and dedication led her to represent Jamaica as a member of the Jamaican Softball Team, playing in Jamaica as well as internationally in Belize and Panama. Her involvement in sports reflected the energetic, disciplined, and adventurous spirit that would remain a part of her throughout her life.

In 1955, Joyce traveled to England to pursue her calling in nursing. She attended Queen Mary's Hospital in London, where she completed her nursing studies and graduated in 1959 as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) and Midwife.

Joyce returned to Jamaica in 1961 and began working at the University Hospital, serving in the Midwifery Department. Her dedication to nursing and her genuine concern for others quickly became hallmarks of her professional life.

In 1962, Joyce moved to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where she began working at Hamilton General Hospital. During the 16 years she lived in Canada, Joyce continued to grow both personally and professionally. During this chapter of her life, she was married and later divorced, before eventually beginning a new chapter in Arkansas.

In 1978, Joyce made her way to Arkansas, beginning the next chapter of her life. She initially worked in Hot Springs at St. Joseph's Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). After one year, she moved to Little Rock and continued her nursing career at Baptist Health Hospital.

Joyce completed her distinguished nursing career at Arkansas State Hospital, where she devoted 14 years of service before retiring in 2000. Her career spanned decades, countries, and countless lives touched by her compassion and dedication. Nursing was more than a profession for Joyce—it was a calling through which she cared for and served others.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joyce will be remembered most for the person she was: strong, caring, independent, resilient, and devoted to the people she loved. She carried with her the rich heritage of Jamaica, the experiences of a life lived across several countries, and the wisdom gained through decades of caring for others.

Joyce leaves behind a loving family and many cherished relationships.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents Mae McKenzie and Albert Nicholson; her brother, Arthur and sister Alberta Nicholson; and granddaughter Jada Fray

She is survived by her son, David Fray (Karlonda); her grandchildren, Jazmine McKinney (Maxwell), Jayden, and Jordan Fray; great grand Kingston and Kairo McKinney; sister-in-law, Olive Nicholson; nieces, Luci Eanes, Sharon, and Suzanne Nicholson; and a long list of close friends and loved ones whose lives she touched throughout the years.

Joyce's journey took her from Jamaica to England, Canada, and ultimately Arkansas, but wherever she went, she left an enduring impression through her strength, kindness, professionalism, and love for others.

Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy will live on through her family, the many people she cared for during her nursing career, and the countless lives she touched.

May her memory forever be a blessing, and may she rest in eternal peace.
