Joe Lee Pettigrew

Joe Lee Pettigrew Sr., age 75, was born on August 12, 1951 in Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Albert and Lula Chester Pettigrew. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life was defined by hard work, generosity, and love for his family.

Joe received his education through the Pulaski County Special School District and was a proud member of the first graduating class of 1970, Wilber D. Mills High School. He later attended Shorter College, where he earned an associate degree in Business.

In 1971, Joe answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He served honorably until his discharge, carrying with him the discipline, dedication, and sense of responsibility that would remain hallmarks of his life.

Joe was a dedicated and hardworking man who worked in maintenance at the U.S. Federal Building until his retirement in 2011. A man of many practical talents, Joe had a natural ability to build, repair, and create with his hands. He was dependable, resourceful, and never hesitated to assist others in need.

On October 6, 2011, Joe married Edner Jackson. Their years together were filled with love, companionship, laughter, and the simple joys of sharing life side by side. Edner was not only his beloved wife, but also his cherished companion, and together they created a bond rooted in love, devotion, and family.

Joe was a man who never sought the spotlight, yet his presence was always felt. His warm spirit and gentle sense of humor brought laughter and joy to those fortunate enough to know him. His kindness, patience, and playful spirit created a lasting connection with all who knew him, leaving behind cherished memories of a man whose warmth, love, and laughter made everyone feel special.

Joe’s greatest legacy is reflected in the family he loved so deeply. He is remembered by his devoted wife, Edner Jackson Pettigrew; his sons, Joe Lee Pettigrew Jr. (Marilyn), Antwan Tyrell Pettigrew, Russell Roddy, Donald Dwight Conley, Wali Bowlds, Ameer Bowlds, and his daughters, Lakesha Davis and Amina (Ahmad) Williams.

He will also be fondly remembered by his siblings, Doris Knight; James (Barbara) Pettigrew; Joyce (Jewel) Withers; and Anthony (Jacquelyn) Pettigrew.

His love and legacy continue through his grandchildren, Jessica Pettigrew, Joe L. Pettigrew III, Sederick Webb, Jake Webb, Zachary Webb, Khaleque Bowlds-Merritt, Samihah Williams, Saniyah Williams, and Kamil Williams.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Pettigrew Sr. and Lula Chester Pettigrew; his brothers, Eugene Washington, Calvin Lewis Pettigrew, and Albert Pettigrew Jr.; and his sisters, Margaret Brooks, Dorothy Mae Walker, and Lula Mae Gamble.

Joe will also be remembered in the hearts and minds of his two dear friends Carol Grant and Tommy Lindey.

Though his earthly journey has come to an end, Joe's memory will continue through the family he loved, the lives he touched, the laughter he shared, and the many acts of kindness he quietly gave to others. His hands may be at rest, but the work of his life will continue in those who knew and loved him.

Joe accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Elder Author Divine at Graham Temple Church of God in Christ. His faith remained an important part of his life's foundation.
